Christian art is art produced in an attempt to illustrate, supplement and portray in tangible form the principles of Christianity. Most Christian groups use or have used art to some extent, although some have had strong objections to some forms of religious image, and there have been major periods of iconoclasm within Christianity. Images of Jesus and narrative scenes from the Life of Christ are the commonest subjects, and scenes from the Old Testament play a part in the art of most denominations. Images of the Virgin Mary and saints are much rarer in Protestant art than that of Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. HistoryFrom Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Christian art" Jonah and Christ in early Christian art? Q. Early Christian artists used metaphores to represent Christ in art work with the Good Shepherd and the story of Jonah. Some interesting things to note: Jonah was in the belly of the sea creature for 3 days::Christ was in the tomb for three days. Jonah was released with an unharmed body::Christ was resurrected in physical wholeness. How long before Christ and the Christian break-off from Judaism was the story of Jonah known? And was this another attempt at gaining more converts by associating Christianity with other religions? Was the story of the three days in the tomb and the resurrection created for this purpose (association for converts)? Note: I know many fundamental Christians will answer, probably with anger or rudeness, however I ( [cont.] Asked by hayaa_bi_taqwa - Sat Dec 8 20:12:07 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think the Jonah story was an old legend of the Western Semites. In the Urgarit texts (an ancient city state in Syria) there are parallel stories of a giant fish, so its alot older than the resurrection story. The 3 day thing may be to do with the cycle of the moon, the disappearance of the old moon and the appearance of the new. Ancient societies were more conscious of lunar cycles in their calenders, our word month is derivated from the moon, so the old and new moons had more significance then. Metaphorically the 3 day cycle would have represented rebirth, it's not a co-incidence that Easter is celebrated at the beginning of spring time. Also the emergence of Jonah from the belly of the fish carried strong symbolic birth connotations. Answered by numbnuts222 - Sat Dec 8 20:28:26 2007 from a christian point of view, is abstract art wrong? Q. I happen to like abstract art because I can use my own imagination in interpreting the piece. Asked by cool_in_07 - Fri Jul 14 14:34:31 2006 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. I would think that realistic art would be more blasphemous than abstract art, since it actually looks like what it is representing and is therefore more like an idol. plus abstract art, to me, represents emotions more than actual objects.
