Jesus of Nazareth (c. 4 BC/BCE – c. 30 AD/CE), also known as Jesus Christ, is the central figure of Christianity, which views him as the Messiah foretold in the Old Testament, with most Christian denominations believing him to be the Son of God and God incarnate. Islam considers Jesus a prophet and also the Messiah, whereas Judaism rejects these claims. Several other religions revere him in some way.

The principal sources of information regarding Jesus' life and teachings are the four canonical gospels, especially the Synoptic Gospels, though some scholars argue that other texts (such as the Gospel of Thomas) are as relevant as the canonical gospels to the historical Jesus. Most critical scholars in biblical studies believe that some parts of the New Testament are useful for reconstructing Jesus' life, agreeing that he was a Jew who was regarded as a teacher and healer, that he was baptized by John the Baptist, and was crucified in Jerusalem on the orders of the Roman Prefect of Judaea, Pontius Pilate, on the charge of sedition against the Roman Empire. Aside from these few conclusions, academic studies remain inconclusive about the chronology, the central message of Jesus' preaching, his social class, cultural environment, and religious orientation. Scholars offer competing descriptions of Jesus as the awaited Messiah, as a self-described Messiah, as the leader of an apocalyptic movement, as an itinerant sage, as a charismatic healer, and as the founder of an independent religious movement.

Christian views of Jesus (see also Christology) center on the belief that Jesus is divine, is the Messiah whose coming was prophesied in the Old Testament, and that he was resurrected after his crucifixion. Theologian and bishop Lesslie Newbigin says "the whole of Christian teaching would fall to the ground if it were the case that the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus were not events in real history but stories told to illustrate truths which are valid apart from these happenings." Christians predominantly believe that Jesus is the "Son of God" (generally meaning that he is God the Son, the second person in the Trinity) who came to provide salvation and reconciliation with God by his death for their sins. Other Christian beliefs include Jesus' virgin birth, performance of miracles, ascension into Heaven, and a future Second Coming. While the doctrine of the Trinity is accepted by most Christians, a few groups reject the doctrine of the Trinity, wholly or partly, as non-scriptural.

In Islam, Jesus (Arabic: عيسى‎, commonly transliterated as Isa) is considered one of God's important prophets, a bringer of scripture, and a worker of miracles. Jesus is also called "Messiah", but Islam does not teach that he was divine. Islam teaches that Jesus ascended bodily to heaven without experiencing the crucifixion and resurrection, rather than the traditional Christian belief of the death and resurrection of Jesus.

How does the study of Jesus Christ as a historical figure prove the subjective nature of history?
Q. And what were the Gospels of Thomas & how do they complicate the understanding of the 'Real jesus'?
Asked by KUH LAIRE! - Fri Dec 4 15:19:26 2009 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It does not. History is not subjective. It consists of facts, events and corroborations. History intends to do nothing to assert itself; it is merely a collection of facts from a variety of sources by a number of persons deemed responsible for the facts. Jesus is an historical person.

How was Jesus/son fully god on this earth if he had to abide by the will of the father?
Q. Also, doesnt it sound as if the son and father are acting separately on this earth (father > son, as son has to obey the father's will). Yet, if both of them are god, then Christianity is polytheistic. If the son and father were acting in separate ways on this earth (yet both of them were god), then what do Christians mean when they say "they are not the same, but the same in essence"? How was Jesus fully god and fully human on this earth?

A. You know there is a religious category right? Jesus was supposed to be God in human form. The word "Son" in those times could mean they were the very same.

What was the jewish calendar date for the crucifixion of Jesus?
Q. The Jewish calendar precedes the Christian Calendar by thousands of years and it is now 5769 for them. So how can we use math to get back to that date of the crucifixion. There have been so many changes in Christian Calendar I am not sure how many years to subtract. Shall we just deduct 2009 and then take away 5 more to allow for errors and then add 33 to reconcile the age of Jesus?
Asked by king of the word - Sun Nov 15 15:19:04 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If you look at link you'll see that the leap year pattern of the Jewish calendar wasn't firmly established until the 4th century, so there is probably no way to determine an absolute correspondence.
